In the Same Boat

Brothers and sisters – dearer now, having come through so much together. And still, how hard it is to learn to walk hand in hand! When we have been wronged by this “brother?” When we feel unloved by that “sister? But we are not called to weakness – we are called into greatness. We are called upward and onward to follow the path of goodness, and deeper into light; we have heard it is a path of unity, and that unity leads to goodness, and strength. Let us shake off the weakness, stand up, and roll up our sleeves. Is there not one who will wipe away our tears, and make all things right in that shining day? Let us set our eyes toward the rising sun, even though it still be dark, and open the windows of our soul to receive the light, and to the sweet influences of the sun’s rays. The moment we ask for light, will it not come flooding in? Will we not receive, when we ask the Father of our Hearts? Then let the dark slip away…

Father, give me the grace to stand up and fight for what is right, and to do what I can do to fight for unity. Help us to remember the boat we are in – to forgive one another, and seek your strength for help in time of need. Help us to seek your light to illuminate our path, and to brighten the darkness when it comes. Help us to find that song that will lift our spirits and fill our hearts with your secret joy. Help us to learn, and as we learn, to grow kinder. Help us find joy in what is good, and help us to be like you, sharing that good with others. It may be that as we take each other by the hand and climb up the stair you have set before us, we will find ourselves a little closer to heaven than we were before. It may be that as we work together to mend the broken hearts and heal the hurts, your love will flow through us and so be in us, and make a peaceful haven that will bless our own hearts as well.

“Therefore, my brothers, therefore, sisters dear,

However I, troubled or selfish, fail

In tenderness, or grace, or service clear,

I every moment draw to you more near;

God in us from our hearts veil after veil

Keeps lifting, till we see with his own sight,

And all together run in unity’s delight.”

–George MacDonald, The Diary of an Old Soul
